“Read over” — What does it mean?

🔹 “Read over” — What does it mean?

Read over means:

To read something carefully in order to check, review, or understand it better.

It’s very similar to “go over”, but more specific to reading.

Common Uses

1. To check for mistakes

  • Can you read over my essay before I submit it?
  • She read over the contract carefully.

👉 Here it means: check carefully

2. To review or refresh your memory

  • I read over my notes before the exam.
  • Let me read over the instructions again.

👉 Here it means: review again

🔹 Grammar Pattern

  • Read over + something
    • read over the report
    • read over this
    • read over my message

Past tense:

  • Present: read over (reed)
  • Past: read over (red)

Example:

  • I read over it yesterday. (pronounced “red”)

🔥 Difference: “read” vs “read over”

  • I read the email. → just read it
  • I read over the email. → read it carefully to check or review

“Read over” feels more intentional and careful.

🧠 Memory Trick

Think:

You don’t just read it.
